Fashion feature: Oden by Börkur

The series, called “The woman who fell to earth”, by photographer and filmmaker Börkur Sigthorsson features a selection of outfits from the celebrated graduation collection by designer Oden Wilson. The 28-year-old womenswear designer, who graduated from Central Saint Martins in London last year, divides his time between Milan and the UK. He is consulting for Marni as womenswear assistant designer since November 2009 and his capsule S/S 2010 collection for the Swedish brand WEEKDAY is now out in stores. Photographer and filmmaker Börkur Sigthorsson started his career in photography in Iceland in the late nineties. In January 2010, Börkur had his first Los Angeles exhibition, Work In Progress, with Blythe Projects in collaboration with The Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA), which showed the first installment in the ongoing photographic project Conditions as well as footage from his film work. These days he is based in London where he wrote and directed his first short film Support in 2008, which has gone on to win a number of grand prix prizes, as well as being shortlisted for several festivals.

Börkur on the shoot: “The Woman Who Fell To Earth… The fusion of the utilitarian and the regal is what drew me to Oden’s work. Consequently, that became a theme: alien royalty, detected off her galactic route and stranded in Shoreditch. Which, of course, is a haven for the odd and the eccentric; the alien and the extrovert. She’d fit right in.”

Oden on the collection: “My idea was to use the vocabulary of “couture” fashion and achieve it in an unconventional and new way…. I developed a cutting concept inspired by origami which produced hugh geometrics that I then gathered and collapsed around the body to form interesting and innovative shapes. These where then controlled and manipulated with a series of utilitarian drawstrings and hardware. Making the ” couture” context relevant, modern and new.”
